Abstract
The forestry sector in Peru and Colombia faces the dual challenge of promoting economic development while safeguarding ecosystems, and this research examines how ISO 14001:2015 and FSC/PEFC certifications can complement each other to strengthen sustainability and traceability in forest management; through a mixed-method approach that included document review, comparative analysis, and six case studies of companies and communities such as Maderacre, Forestal Otorongo, and Comunidad Nativa Bélgica, the study found that FSC/PEFC certifications ensure conservation and credibility but struggle with high costs and limited market access, while ISO 14001:2015 provides a flexible framework for continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and integration of sustainability into business strategies; when combined, these systems reinforce resilience and legitimacy, helping organizations overcome structural barriers and align with the Sustainable Development Goals, with Peru placing emphasis on community benefits and biodiversity, and Colombia prioritizing regulatory compliance, ultimately showing that the articulation of both frameworks is a powerful driver of environmental transformation in Latin America’s forestry sector.
